Resources for erosion and sediment management in forestry
This document is a collection of national and international good practice guidelines, legislation, spatial information, research, and funding options for forestry, land management and environmental protection. The information is relevant for private landowners, small forest owners, iwi, commercial forestry companies and other interested stakeholders.
Clear-Fell Restoration Guidelines for the Top of the South Island
Last year Council received MBIE Envirolink funding to develop guidelines for landowners looking to restore areas of forestry back into native forest after they’ve been clear-felled.
In recent years we’ve seen an increase of landowners looking to move away from rotational pine forestry in areas that are environmentally risky and economically marginal in scale. Often these marginal forestry blocks suffer from erosion and pest issues which impact our freshwater, marine and terrestrial environments.
The easiest option for these landowners is often to replant these areas in pine, due to perceived challenges and resources required to return these areas to native plantings.
To support landowners to make decisions around what land use is best for their properties, particularly in steep and erodible areas, Council commissioned Dr Adam Forbes, a native forest establishment expert to develop guidelines specific to Te Tauihu the Top of the South including case studies from across Tasman, Marlborough and Nelson.
