What Climate Action can our community take?

Community greenhouse gas emissions

See here (3MB PDF) the Community Greenhouse gas emissions inventories for Nelson for the FY18/19 and FY 19/20 and a video here showing how the report was developed.

  • During FY 18/19 reporting period Nelson’s total gross GHG community emissions were 367,257 tCO2e, which equates to 6.9 tCO2e/person.
  • During FY 19/20 reporting period the Nelson region emitted a total gross 330,980 tCO2e, which equates to 6.1                  tCO2e/person

  • Transport (e.g. road and air travel) was the largest GHG community emission emitting sector for FY 19/20, producing 61.1% of Nelson’s total gross GHG emissions, with petrol and diesel use contributing to 86% of the Transport sector’s GHG emissions. Petrol and diesel transport GHG emissions can be broken down into:
    • On-road transport uses of petrol and diesel produced 46.9% of Nelson’s total gross GHG emissions. This consists of all standard transport vehicles used on roads (e.g. cars, trucks, buses, etc.)
    • off-road transport uses of petrol and diesel produced 6.1% of Nelson’s total gross GHG emissions. This consists of all fuel used for the movement of machinery and vehicles off-roads (e.g. within agriculture, construction and industry).
  • Stationary Energy (i.e. non-transport energy use) was the second largest GHG emission emitting sector for FY 19/20, producing 14.3% of Nelson’s total gross GHG emissions, with electricity consumed (including associated electricity transmission and distribution losses) contributing to 50% of the Stationary Energy sector’s GHG emissions.

Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme & Warmer Healthier Homes Trust

Grants available for free home insulation

“Warmer Kiwi Homes” is a Government-funded programme offering insulation that aims to make homes warmer, drier and healthier. EECA provides 80%-90% of the cost of insulation for homes that comply with certain criteria. A local Trust called “Warmer Healthier Homes Te Tauihu Charitable Trust” (WHH) can issue top-ups to cover the remaining cost (up to 100%) for eligible residents and Community Services card holders.

What is the criteria?

  • homeowner permanently occupies the home; and
  • the home was built before the year 2008; and
  • the home does not have adequate insulation; and
  • the homeowner has a Community Services Card or SuperGold combo card, OR the home is in an area identified as lower-income.

Who are the local suppliers?

Currently there are two EECA preferred providers that offer the government grant. Please contact:

If you are looking to get the 100% cover, the Warmer Healthier Homes Te Tauihu Charitable Trust has selected Absolute Energy www.absoluteenergy.co.nz as their preferred supplier.

What are the benefits:

  • WHH is improving the overall standard of the regions’ properties and improving residents’ health in those communities by retrofitting insulation into existing homes;
  • The programme supports residents in the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough regions to have improved living environments;
  • The programme assists homeowners and community members most in need to improve insulation measures, heating effectiveness, and overall energy efficiency of their homes,
  • The positive effects of improved insulation in homes are:
    • Reductions in energy, decreasing our overall household carbon footprint and resulting in lower electricity bills.
    • Reduced incidence of respiratory illness (such as colds, flu, asthma).
    • Fewer hospitalisations and doctors’ visits.
    • Fewer days off work and out of school.

Nelson Tasman Climate Forum

As part of our Long Term Plan (2021-31) Nelson City Council is supporting the Nelson Tasman Climate Forum with $100,000 of funding each year for the first three years of the LTP. The Nelson Tasman Climate Forum is a community-led initiative open to everyone. They’ve produced a Climate Action Book which is filled with practical ways to lower your carbon footprint, such as taking broken household items to a Repair Cafe as this video shows.
