Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Update

Currently there are no Civil Defence declarations.

Discredited earthquake safety advice circulated

New Zealand agencies involved in promoting earthquake safety are concerned that advice from a source discredited overseas is being circulated in New Zealand. The information is contained in an email message, sometimes known as the 'triangle of life.' It discourages people from taking the safest option to protect yourself during an earthquake.

Find out what the international best practice advice is for preparing for an earthquake.

Get ready, Get thru

New Zealand and Nelson face many potential disasters. In cases such as a weather-related or volcanic disaster, there may be time for a warning. But an earthquake or a tsunami close to land could strike without warning. All disasters have the potential to cause disruption, damage property and take lives. So, it's vital to be prepared. How ready are you? Be prepared to cope on your own for up to three days, or more. This is when you will be most vulnerable. You should:

  1. Have a Household Emergency Plan
  2. Keep a Getaway Kit if you need to be evacuated
  3. Store an Emergency Survival Kit
  4. Plan for emergencies for your Business
  5. Understand what to do in specific Civil Defence Emergencies

For the more information on Get ready, Get thru, visit the Ministry of Civil Defence's public education site.

Civil Defence Emergency Management

Have a look at the operative Nelson Tasman Emergency Management Plan. It is a useful resource for your own emergency planning, for education projects or for simply being aware of your communities planning and response for emergencies. Copies are available from the Nelson Tasman Emergency Management office, libraries, Council offices and service centres.
