What's on the agenda for 2008

After a retreat on 11 and 12 December 2007 where exited youth councillors met with incoming ones, a sense of eagerness has been growing to continue the good work.

During the retreat, the departing members talked about their successful activities in 2007 – Live 12, Pizza with the Politicians, starting plans for the Tahuna Beach Project – and encouraged new members to keep thinking outside the box. The new NYC is looking forward to the completion of the Tahunanui Beach Project which will feature barbeques, seated areas, new planting and art work.

“We are really excited to keep going on with projects started by the 2007 Youth Councillors, but we also have a bunch of great ideas that we’d like to see on the calendar for 2008. Seeing the Tahuna Beach Project come to life is going to be an incredible achievement for all of us who have been involved at stages along the way,” says Olivia McIntyre (Youth Councillor, 2007-2008).

Tahunanui Beach Project

Earthworks are expected to begin around September, with construction of the dedicated BBQ area to commence closer to October.

Relay for Life

A Nelson Youth Council team participated in the Relay for Life and raised about $500 for the Cancer Society.

YES (Youth Event Support)

Youth Councillors continue to contribute the YES scheme, a programme that encourages young people to organise youth-oriented events in Nelson by helping with financial assistance and teaming them up with a community mentor.

Youth Guide to Growing Up

This highly anticipated booklet is now out and available from all Nelson libraries, Council offices, the New Hub, Heath Action and high schools. It was written by Youth Councillors and is full of tips and helpful ideas on a variety of issues from how to change a car tyre to setting up a flat.
