Preserving our heritage
Heritage Grants
The Whakatu Nelson Heritage Strategy provides for a $35,000 Heritage Incentive Fund available for individuals and groups to apply for to help maintain heritage sites and buildings. Grants are available to maintain, repair, restore, stabilise and provide advice and work for statutory seismic strengthening for buildings, objects and sites that are identified in the Council’s Resource Management Plan.
Heritage Strategy
The Nelson City Council is committed to working with the community to improve the promotion, protection and maintenance of the city’s heritage resources and has adopted the Whakatu Nelson Heritage Strategy for that purpose.

Living
heritage plants guide

and Nelson City Council. The Living
Heritage Plants Guide describes eight different lowland
ecosystems in the Nelson City area, providing advice on planting,
and lists of native species appropriate for each ecosystem.

Heritage
matters
The Nelson City Council believes it is important to provide
a framework to encourage protection of archaeological sites,
heritage buildings and trees. It does this by regulation and
encouragement.
Digging
deep for history
Walking down Trafalgar Street or strolling
along the Maitai . . . our daily life in Nelson only skates
about on the surface. Dig a little deeper and there are old
stories to be found.
