Water contact ban lifted
14 July 2008
The swimming and shellfish ban that was in place as a result of heavy rainfall and associated flooding last Friday of the Neale Park sewer pump station overflow tank is now lifted. The public may resume swimming and recreational activities in the Haven and at Tahunanui Beach. Council reinforces its previous advice that due to the proximity of the urban area and the potential for contamination from various sources, shellfish should not be collected from the enclosed waters of the Waimea Inlet and Nelson Haven at any time.
Grampians Reserve and informed roads closed until further notice
Part of the Grampains Reserve and any informed roads passing through it in which forestry harvesting logging operations are presently being carried out has been closed to the public while such work is undertaken.
This includes the Ronaki track area that has been closed from 21 April. Absolutely no entry. The closed areas will have barriers and signs erected and any person entering the area, ignoring warning signs, commits an offence against Council's Reserves Bylaw 2006.

Progress on the culvert construction in Quarantine Road is on schedule.
The job is still expected to finish on time by the end of November 2008. Council appreciates the understanding from road users and local businesses while the work continues.

However, typically traffic will be restricted to one lane only and access to the Nelson Airport will be via Bolt Road and access from the airport will continue to be available via Quarantine Road.
Access into businesses along Quarantine Road will still be maintained on each side of the work site.

Maitai and Roding waterworks catchments
Nelson City Council will be laying cyanide from time to time with the Maitai and Roding waterworks catchments to control possums.
During periods of poisoning, warning signs will be in place in accordance to section 95A of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996.
Do not dump greenwaste in reserves and parks
Permanent notice
Staff working for Nelmac, the company contracted to look after parks for Council, report ongoing problems with residents around parks dumping their greenwaste and garden rubbish over fences and onto public land. This causes Council to expend additional ratepayer dollars to clean up the parks and eradicate pest plants that are dumped. Please report offenders to Council on +64 3 546 0200.
Ministry of Health - Public Notice
Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water standing in the fittings for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mugful of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. This simple precaution is recommended for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.
Please clear stormwater grills
This is a permanent notice
posted 16 November 2006
Heavy rain is forecast from time to time in Nelson, so the Nelson City Council is asking residents to clear leaves and other rubbish from any stormwater grills near their property.
If sumps are blocked, rain water can quickly build up, adding to the risk of flood damage. Leaves falling and blocking the grills can be a problem. Spring and warm weather days are good times to clean them. |
