Nelson City

Nelson’s inner city area is one of the most attractive in the country. It has been enhanced with the paving of the top of the main street, which provides an attractive setting for sitting outdoors at one of the many inner city cafés. There has been an ongoing increase in the Nelson restaurant and café scene, which has had an influence on the foot traffic and overall activity levels within the city centre. The Nelson Provincial Museum opened in October 2005 and has added to the development of upper Trafalgar Street, while the Visitor Information Centre has enhanced the river frontage at the lower end of the street.

Commercial retail rents have continued to increase along the prime shopping strip, but with only modest growth in fringe areas. Demand for office space is steady with a shortage emerging for good quality/large office premises available for lease. There are now more specialist retail outlets operating in the main centre rather than larger department stores. New inner city developments include Fashion Island Nelson in Hardy Street and a retail/office complex in Wakatu Square. The quality and diversity of visitor accommodation on offer has also increased markedly.

Richmond - Retail and Commercial

Overview Recent growth in Richmond has slowed, however retail development at the western end of Queen Street is expected to join up with existing retail and commercial properties in the future; a limited amount of land in central Richmond is still available for commercial development. There is continued discussion on the installation of a multiplex cinema complex. The retail base in Richmond has diversified to include more ethnic dining and specialist consumables, homewares and lifestyle products and the largest mall in the district. New developments have recently been completed, with more proposed on the fringe of the existing Central Business District and retail areas. A number of existing commercial buildings have been redeveloped to accommodate larger national retail outlets. Beyond Richmond, the growth in population and tourism has fuelled the development of ‘experiential’ tourism destinations including cafés, giftware, art glass and consumables. In Stoke several buildings have been demolished to make way for the extension of an existing supermarket.
