Broadgreen House
Getting involved as a volunteer
Broadgreen depends on supporters who give their time doing a variety of tasks, from membership of the Broadgreen Society with a focus on administration and upkeep, through to being rostered as a guide for one day a month.
Joyce Allen has been a guide at Broadgreen for many years and says she finds the role very rewarding - with the companionship of the other guides and the enjoyment of showing people around the house highlights. Joyce lived in Stoke for many years after her family shifted over from Golden Bay in World War II. She can remember coming to Broadgreen to buy apples when the Langbein family owned the house, and she also has a connection with the Buxtons.
"When I left school in 1946, I went to work as a junior office girl at Buxtons
in Trafalgar Street," she recalls. "In those days, you worked your way up through
the ledger office - I used to take my turn on the cash desk where we dealt with
all the cash transactions sent in little cups from the counters in a vacuum pipe
system."
Join the Friends The Friends of Broadgreen has recently been formed, and more friends are
invited to join. New guides are always needed to join the roster, and are offered training before taking
their turn at the desk, on tour or as a volunteer helper to staff.
